Citizenship and British Values

Our Intent   2 177 s

The purpose of Citizenship education at HASU is to equip our students with the knowledge and experiences they need to live happy and fulfilling adult lives and to fully take their place in our local, national and international community.

We have carefully sequenced our Citizenship curriculum around six themes:

  • Human Rights (through the Rights Respecting Schools Award)
  • Democracy
  • Careers
  • British values
  • Media & ideas
  • Making change

Collectively, these six themes address the requirements of the Citizenship National Curriculum, but also go further in developing our students’ preparedness for life in modern Britain and their social, moral, spiritual and cultural growth.

British Values

Core British Values are identified as:

  • Democracy
  • The rule of law
  • Individual liberty
  • Mutual respect and tolerance

Through our Citizenship curriculum, all students are inducted into these values and learn about them, their histories, and students’ own role in championing them in order to build a better society.

Citizenship Lessons

The core Citizenship curriculum is implemented through one 30 minute tutor time session per week, from Year 7 to Year 9. Students across the academy study the same themes each year in spiralling complexity. These sessions teach the core knowledge, and allow students to develop their oracy skills, and promote critical thinking throughout.

Assessing Impact

Once the Citizenship lessons on each theme have been completed, students are set a quiz via Satchel One to test their knowledge and understanding. This allows us to have confidence in students' understanding.
