Revision Strategies

At Harris Academy Sutton, we recognise the importance of preparing students for their exams. On this page, you will find key information and resources designed to support students with their revision.

What equipment do I need for my exams?

Students must make sure they are properly equipped for every exam. You should bring two black ball-pens, a pencil, eraser, sharpener, ruler and any other writing or Mathematics equipment (calculator, compass, protractor) needed to your exams. Check with your teacher if you think you will need any specialist equipment.

How do I revise for my exams?

Please see a list of top tips below on how students can revise effectively for their exams.

Active Recall & Testing

  • Use revision cards: and ask someone to test you on them.

  • Prepare revision quizzes: on platforms like Quizlet and test yourself.

  • Create mind maps or flow diagrams from memory:to check your understanding.

  • Regularly revisit topics: you feel less confident about to reinforce them.

Improving Memory

  • Tip 1: Test yourself: Testing yourself often, for example with flashcards, is a great way to remember information. Don’t cram too much information on each card – use cues to prompt yourself on single concepts.

  • Tip 2: Mnemonics: You can use mnemonics to remember all kinds of things, for example in physics, the visible light spectrum can be remembered by Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain… the more bizarre the better.

  • Tip 3: Mind maps: Mind maps can help you make links within subjects and can be a great way to elaborate on, and make connections between, topics.

  • Tip 4: Spaced practice: Space out your revision a little bit every day rather than cramming it all in the night before, then go back after a period of time and try to remember it. We call this the 'spacing effect'.

Exam Practice

  • Practice writing skills, especially creative writing, for relevant independent school exams.

  • Use past exam papers: to understand the exam format, time constraints, and how marks are awarded.

  • Simulate exam conditions:when practicing with past papers to improve time management.

Organisation and Planning

  • Create a revision timetable:to mix subjects and schedule time for different topics throughout the week.

  • Know what you'll be examined on and when:¯to effectively plan your revision.

  • Organize your revision notes:to make them easier to review.

Effective Study Habits

  • Be consistent:with short, daily practice sessions rather than cramming at the last minute.

  • It can be easy to become distracted during revision – whether that is checking social media, watching television, or spending time with friends. Careful organisation of your time, however, can make a significant difference.

  • Below, you will find a range of practical tips to help you revise effectively. These include guidance on how to stay organised, maintain healthy habits, and set achievable goals, all of which can support you in staying focused and making the most of your revision.
