What is Psychology?

Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behaviour. It explores how individuals think, feel, and act both independently and in social contexts. By examining a range of psychological approaches and real-world applications, students gain insight into the complexities of human behaviour and mental processes.

Why do we teach Psychology at HASU?

Psychology is a subject that encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and empathy. At Harris Academy Sutton, we believe that understanding human behaviour is essential for navigating the modern world. Through studying Psychology, students develop analytical and evaluative skills, learn to interpret data, and explore ethical considerations in research. Our aim is to empower students to question assumptions, appreciate diverse perspectives, and apply psychological knowledge to everyday life and future careers.

How do we teach Psychology at HASU?

Our A Level Psychology curriculum follows the AQA specification and is structured around key topics such as Social Influence, Memory, Attachment, Psychopathology, Approaches in Psychology, Biopsychology, Research Methods, and Issues and Debates. In Year 13, students also explore optional topics such as Relationships, Schizophrenia, and Aggression.

Lessons are designed to be engaging and interactive, combining theoretical learning with practical application. Students are encouraged to critically evaluate psychological studies, and apply their understanding to real-life scenarios. We use a variety of teaching methods including discussions, case studies, experiments, and multimedia resources to support diverse learning styles.

What is Sociology?

Sociology is the study of society, social institutions, and the relationships between individuals and groups. It explores how social structures such as family, education, religion, and the media influence human behaviour and shape our identities. Sociology encourages students to question the world around them and understand the forces that drive social change and inequality.

Why do we teach Sociology at HASU?

At Harris Academy Sutton, we teach Sociology to develop students’ critical thinking, cultural awareness, and understanding of contemporary social issues. Sociology equips students with the tools to analyse society from multiple perspectives, fostering empathy and a deeper appreciation of diversity. Through studying Sociology, students become informed citizens who can engage thoughtfully with debates about gender, class, ethnicity, and power in modern Britain and beyond.
