Year 7

Welcome from Head of Year 7, Mr Wise

MwiWelcome parents and carers. My name is Mr Wise, I am Head of Year 7 at Harris Academy Sutton having joined Harris Academy Sutton in September 2020 previously leading the current Year 10s. I have worked in education ever since leaving school at 18 years old in a Pastoral context and have worked locally throughout in the London Boroughs of Sutton and Croydon having most recently worked as Transition Coordinator at Harris Academy Purley alongside my Geography teaching role.

I am excited to be working with parents, carers and most importantly the students that have just joined the Harris Academy Sutton family, supporting them with their first steps into adulthood and persevering through the many opportunities and challenges this journey will bring. My vision is for Students to be happy, enthusiastic and confident about attending school every day and have a positive educational experience that raises ambitions, goals and opportunities that set them up as lifelong learners, building on our values of Innovation and Discovery. I wish to also promote year 7 as a family within a family, the sense of year 7 being a family within the Harris Academy Sutton family and build them up as respectful and polite students that have high integrity. My passion for the wellbeing of our students whilst leading them to become challenged, well behaved individuals is quickly seen amongst the students.

At Harris Academy Sutton the expectations we have of our students are high and we work hard to support and encourage our Year 7 students to be the best learners they can be through a range of support. We pride ourselves on the provision of a supportive and nurturing environment for our students and alongside myself and the students wonderful form tutors we have an incredible wellbeing team who support our students as positively as possible with the transition into secondary school, all the way up to their GCSE’s and A Levels. Further support ranges from SEND support, ELSA, intervention sessions, school Counsellor and behaviour mentoring just to name a few. We have a consistent approach to behaviour systems across the Academy with our 5 p’s approach in the classroom and also thrive on celebrating the positive behaviour and students can’t wait to hear the results of the merit totals and house points each week from all of the healthy house competitions offered throughout the year. A range of rewards will be up for grabs throughout the year.

What is it like to be a Year 7 at HASU?

Students in Year 7 will be just embarking on the start of their secondary school journey and will begin Year 7 getting used to the changes secondary school brings. They will be assisted at every turn by their tutor, myself as Head of Year and the whole Academy team. During the first term, students will get used to their timetable, homework schedule and academy life. Within no time the students will have made lots of new friends, be able to easily find their way around and become a well-established part of the Harris Academy Sutton family.

As the year goes on students will study a wide range of subjects all with a breadth of topics which will allow them to learn a range of new knowledge and skills. Outside of this they will have a range of opportunities to join different enrichment clubs each term, take on student leadership roles, take part in our Integrity, Innovation and Discovery (IID) days based around our core values and compete against the rest of the school in many House events. Community spirit and healthy competition will form a fundamental aspect of their journey through year 7 and beyond.
