Business

What is Business?

Business at HASU is the study of how businesses operate and the challenges that they face in modern society. Business-studies covers a wide range of content, models and theories ranging from how an entrepreneur will start a business to how amultinational firm manages each functional department of marketing, operations, finance and human resources.

Why do we teach Business at HASU?

The Business curriculum at HASU aims to inspire our students to have successful careers in their chosen business profession. Studying Business will broaden our students’ mindsets and spark their curiosity to question our contemporary society.

Our curriculum at HASU will enhance the knowledge and skillset of students. Students will know and understand business concepts, terminology, objectives, the integrated nature of business activity and the impact of business on individuals and wider society. They will be able to apply knowledge and understanding to contemporary business issues and to different types and sizes of businesses in local, national and global contexts. This will enable students to develop as enterprising individuals with the ability to think commercially and creatively to demonstrate business acumen and draw on evidence to make informed business decisions and solve business problems.

Our curriculum enables students to develop as effective and independent learners, and as critical and reflective thinkers with enquiring minds. Throughout the course students will use a critical approach to make informed judgements and investigate and analyse real business opportunities and issues to construct well-argued, well-evidenced, balanced and structured arguments, demonstrating their depth and breadth of understanding of business. Further to this, students will be able to develop and apply quantitative skills relevant to business, including using and interpreting data. These skills can be utilised and integrated across their studies whilst enhancing their key competencies, preparing them for future employability.

How do we teach Business at HASU?

At HASU, Business Studies provides students with a broad foundation of knowledge of business models, theories and techniques to support contemporary business issues the students will see in the modern world. We challenge students to analyse and evaluate business theories and their relevance to the real world.

Our curriculum gives students the opportunity to apply what they have learnt in the classroom to present day matter. Students are often encouraged to justify their views from the eyes of multiple stakeholders. Our lessons incorporate up to date and relevant case studies where students are challenged to provide chains of analysis arising from various decisions that will influence the success of the business in question. Our students are required to consider the advantages and disadvantages of potential decisions before choosing the most appropriate option for the business. Students will develop their skills further by evaluating the likely impact their decision will have on the future success of the business, taking in to account the many external factors in play.

When it comes to delivering the curriculum in the classroom, we strive for students become inspired from the entrepreneurs and business case studies we explore in class. Students will be equipped with the knowledge and skills that could enhance employability for the business sector in the future. We encourage students engage in wider reading and regularly analyse real life business scenarios and reflect about the impact certain business decisions have had on society.

What exam board do we study?

Students studying Business at HASU follow the Edexcel Specification(1BS0)
