PSHE and RSE

Our Intent

The purpose of personal, social, health and economic education at HASU is to, alongside our whole personal development curriculum, equip our students with the knowledge and experiences they need to live healthy, happy and fulfilling adult lives.

We have carefully sequenced our PSHE curriculum around six themes:PSHE

  • Holding Hands
  • My relationships
  • My body
  • My feelings
  • My wellbeing
  • My Safety

Collectively, these six themes address both our statutory responsibility to deliver the DFE’s Health, Relationships and Sex Education framework (2019) and go beyond this, addressing concepts and themes which we have identified as important for the students of Sutton.

PSHE and RSE Lessons

The core PSHE curriculum is implemented through one 30 minute tutor time session per week, from Year 7 to Year 10. Students across the academy study the same themes in growing complexity. In Year 11, students continue studying a bespoke PSHE curriculum building on the foundations laid in Years 7 to 10.

The PSHE and RSE curriculum is further developed and enhanced through the Academy’s assembly programme, our drop down IID Days and wider initiatives and strategies implemented within academy life.

Assessing Impact

Once the PSHE lessons on each theme have been completed, students are set a quiz via Satchel One to test their knowledge and understanding. This allows us to have confidence in students' understanding.

Relationships and Sex Education

An integral part of PSHE education at HASU is Relationships and Sex Education. Our RSE policy can be found here.

RSE is a major focus throughout the year, and we regularly review students' and parents' views and feedback on their understanding and sense of safety at the Academy.

Some of their feedback from July 2021 can be found below:

As of 2020, the delivery of statutory Relationships and Sex education (RSE) and health education has become statutory in schools. More information can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/relationships-education-relationships-and-sex-education-rse-and-health-education

Parents have the right to withdraw their child from some or all of sex education delivered as part of statutory RSE. Should you wish to withdraw your child from any/all of our RSE, we would request that you arrange a conversation with a member of the senior leadership team to discuss and ensure that your wishes are fully understood by the Academy by emailing info@harrissutton.org.uk.
